Is it all about the visual appeal?

The phrase 'image is everything comes' to mind. What drives a jewelry design? Is it merely stringing components together? Color Combination?

I think good jewelry design arrives at an intent. The appeal to the eye is part of the process, but jewelry should expand perception of the materials, the style and of course the wearer.
